What are the different kinds of Bearings?

The various kinds of bearings are used for wide array of purposes. The type includes the tapered roller thrust, roller thrust, and ball thrust, roller and ball bearings.

Ball Bearings

Ball bearings are one of the most popular and commonly used of all types. It can be found from almost everything such as the hard drives to inline skates. This type can also handle both the thrust loads and radial loads. It can be found in those applications wherein there is a relatively small load.

It works by transmitting the load from the balls outer race and coming from the ball to its inner race. It is also shaped like a sphere so it can only contact the outer and inner race in a very little point that helps in a smooth spinning. It is also important to note that there is not much area of contact that holds the load, thus if the ball bearing becomes overloaded the tendency of the ball is to squish or deform which will ruin the entire bearings.

Roller Bearings

The roller bearings are used in various applications like the conveyer belt rollers, where it is responsible for holding heavy-duty radial loads. In this kind of bearing, the roller is cylinder shaped, so the outer and inner race contact is not within a point but through a line. This will spread the load in an outer direction over a large area, thus it allows the bearing to hold heavier loads compared with the ball bearing.

However, this type is not created to hold much compared with the thrust loading. Another variation of this kind is the needle bearing which uses a cylinder with an extremely small diameter allowing it to be fitted into small and tight places.

Ball Thrust Bearing

The Ball Thrust is commonly used for applications requiring low-speed performance and it cannot hold more radial load. The turntable and barstools uses this type of accessories.

Roller Thrust Bearing

The roller thrust is used to support larger thrust loads. It can be found in the gear sets such as the car transmissions in between the gears, rotating shafts and the housing. Helical gears which are commonly used in transmissions are characterized by angled teeth which causes thrust load that needs to be supported by this kind of bearing.

Tapered Roller Bearings

The tapered roller is used to support larger thrust and radial loads. It is also commonly used for car hubs where it is mounted in a paired order. The paired bearings are faced in opposite direction to allow them to handle the thrust in both of its directions.
