What Is a Bearing?

A bearing refers to a mechanical device that sustains the moving section of an engine and to confine or guide its motion, while putting off motion in the course of applied weight.  Its main objective is to lessen friction with a bare minimum energy loss and simultaneously to control the wear and tear.  Bearings are produced to support the thrust loads, radial loads, or combined thrust-radial loads.

This piece of equipment can be located between the frame shafts of the machine or between the frame of the machine or the contact members. It can also be located between the frame and contact members or between the linkage members and the contact members.  The two most popular forms of this tool are the linear bearings and rotary bearings.

Linear bearing is used to allow movement in a straight direction.  Say for example, your cabinet drawer is making use of this tool to assists the pulling of the drawer back and forth.  Meanwhile, rotary bearing helps in moving around an object in a central spot. Like for example, wheel on the shaft rotates using this tool.  Rotary bearings may include oscillation and one-direction rotation.

With oscillation, this tool goes only through to a section of a rotation.   Other forms of bearings use a different principle when it comes to its design.  The tool that uses a rolling element is called the ball bearings and roller bearings.  This rolling element carry load through placing a spherical element between two parts.  This makes the spherical elements to tumble or to roll with a slight sliding.

Fluid bearing is another common type of tool used.  This tool functions by carrying the load either in a gas or liquid form.  This tool is used when a procedure requires high precision, high loads or high speed, because actual ball bearings will quickly wear out if used in this application.

Magnetic bearing is used when a weight is carried by means of magnetic field.  It is often used in electrical meter to determine power consumption.  It is also used to support the train resulting in a lesser noise and smoother ride.  This tool offers an extremely low friction and can perform work even without using lubrication.    It can also function in vacuum but it is very expensive.

Flexure bearing is used if the weight element needs to twist.  Usually, this tool is considered as one section that combines two other sections.  An example of this tool is a door hinge.  This tool is inexpensive and simple.  It is also lightweight and creates little amount of resistance.  The scope of movement is also limited and it cannot support higher load.

Bearing is designed in a way that it can offer lesser friction and to support various types of loads.  It also helps in providing precise performance with varying speeds and loads.

What you Need to Know about Ball Bearings?

Ball bearings are sphere-shaped metal ball that works densely with other types of bearings that have similar shape and sizes to allow spinning motion.  There are various sizes of ball bearings from very small to extremely large types.  This type of tool can be used in wide array of application.

Though, it may seem that it may look like a sphere-shaped metal ball, some form of these bearing look vastly different.  The appearance depends on the application and the specific function. Bicycle uses wheel type with size somewhat similar of the pea. Some are rolling in bearing cup, others are sealed like a donut, and some are hidden like those used for bicycle wheel or fishing pole.

This kind of tool rolls around in an enclosure to let the object or the thing inside to move and spin.  A system where these bearing are spinning around is known as the race.  The steel ball bearing is one of the many types of this tool.  The function of this bearing is to spin around, sometimes in an extremely fast rate that causes heat and friction.

One of the main causes why ball bearing fails to function properly is heat and too much friction.  If this tool is exposed to these elements like the combination of hot and cold weather or exposure to rain and dew, these may cause the wear down of its lubrication.  These elements cause the bearing to rust and prevent from spinning freely.

Thus, the secret in combating heat and friction is to use lubricants.  Lubrication also helps to extend the life of the race and bearings.  If this tool is well-greased, it will reduce the heat that causes friction.

It is important to note that there are various types of lubricants used in different applications, so you need to use the correct lubricant or grease.  If you prefer to put the grease in ball bearing, make sure not to put too many lubricants.  Liberal grease coating can surely help the situation but adding excessive amount may cause more problems.

As a rule, the faster you want this tool to perform, the more you need to put lubricants or grease.  Thus, it is very important to note that in coating high speed bearings like those found in the wheels, you must use only high quality grease.  Using multi-purpose grease will ensure high performance and long lasting use.

A good type of grease can repel water easily and it will help the ball bearing not to heat up or break down when exposed to these elements.  Moreover, the quality of the bearing also counts, so make sure that you only use genuine material.  Using sub-standard quality may deter the proper performance of your engine and other machinery which is dangerous for the end-users.

What are the Uses of Oil Seals?

Oil seals are also known as dirt, fluid, or grease seals.  The main function of this tool is to close the spaces between the moving and stationary components of any mechanical equipment.  Seals help in preventing the escape of lubricants.

This tool stops any harmful contaminants to enter the machinery particularly in extreme environments. This tool plays a vital role for a successful vehicle operation and proper functioning of every kind of machine.  It help protects all kinds of precision-constructed, roller, sleeve, and close-fitting ball bearings.

For precision bearings, seals help in preventing lubricants from running away from the bearings or spilling off in a specific area.  For machine components, this tool helps in preventing the occurrence of corrosive moisture, abrasives and stops any harmful contaminants to enter the machine.  Seals also help in preventing intermixture of two kinds of medium like water and lubricating oil.

Thus, it is very important to choose the right kind of seal for your machine.  Choosing the best manufacturer or supplier is essential in finding a precise sealing design.  It is important to note that grease seal must match to the aftermarket applications or original equipment.

This is to ensure that your machine will have a reliable and consistent performance.  Oil and grease seals are used in almost all kinds of machineries and it is used in wide array of applications.  Seals are used in power transmission, oil refineries, off-highway, manufacturing, and automotive applications.

In a standard application, dirt seal is usually installed adjacent to the bearing.  It is either sealed in or sealed out as required by the machinery depending on the varying kinds of solid, gases, or liquids that come across a particular mechanism.  Thus, it is important to note that before selecting the lip material or sealing element, you should determine first the operating environment of the oil seal.

By doing so, you can be assured that you can have the right type of seal for the specific function and or mechanism. Fluid seals are also made from various compounds and materials.  It can either be made from PTFE, tetrafluoro-ethylene propylene, fluoro-elastomer, silicone, polyacrylic or ethylene-acrylic, polyacrylate, nitrile, urethane, leather, and felt compounds.

Industrial type of seals is also available in varying sizes such as some are small-bore from zero to 13 inches.  There are also high-temperature and metric varieties of grease seals.  Thus, it is important to have a precise sealing design that is matched with the original equipment so you can have a consistent, accurate and reliable operation.
