There are some types of bearings which offer its distinct and interesting uses such as the giant roller bearings and the magnetic bearings.
Magnetic Bearings
Some of the high-speed devices such as advanced energy storage flywheel system use magnet types of bearings. These bearings are responsible for the floating of the flywheel in a magnetic field.
The flywheels can handle extreme speed which normal type of bearings with balls or rollers would tend to explode or melt down at a speed of 50,000 rpm or revolutions per minute. This is because magnetic types of bearing have no any moving parts so it can handle such incredible speeds.
Giant Roller Bearings
The giant roller bearings are said to be dated back on the early Egyptians at the time they are building pyramids. What they do is they put the rounded shape logs underneath the big and heavy stones so they could roll the logs to the site of the pyramid building. Up to date, this method is also used particularly to move the very heavy and large objects.
As a matter of fact, there are many advanced and current building technologies that use giant ball bearings to withstand earthquakes. The columns of the building are supported by a steel ball bearing. The ball works by resting on concave base that is connected to a ground. If in case an earthquake occurs, the columns which rest on the ball bearing will move lesser because it rolls around its bases.
This will in turn help in isolating the building from any motions in the ground. After the earthquake, the gravity will pull back the columns to the center of the bases. An example of this is the newly built San Francisco International Airport.
