Identifying an oil seal number can be very tricky
particularly if you are using the imperial sizes. Here you will have a quick guide on how to
correctly measure an oil seal.
There are two types of measurement used in oil seals,
the metric oil seals and the imperial oil seals. Among the two, metric oil seals are more
straightforward because the size is already stamped on the seal. Say for example, 20 47 7 means that the
inside of the oil seal is 20mm, outside is 47mm and the width is 7mm.
While, imperial oil seals is trickier because the oil
seal numbers are not written in fractions and it starts with the outside
diameter. For example, 187 125 25
indicates that the sizes of the oil seal is 1.1/4” inside, 1.7/8”outside and 1/4
wide. The first number is always the
outside diameter.
